Top 3 UK Autumnal Walks: Matchmaker Picks
It seems that the endless deluge of rain is finally taking a breather, just in time for us to get out into the beautiful British countryside and enjoy all the autumn colour. Trees are turning, leaves are on the ground, and many may argue this is the best time of the year to really admire the glorious landscape of our countryside.
Here below are three top spots for a country ramble that we can highly recommend, with or without the dog. We have given an indication of the routes to follow below, but recommend you walk with a map, plan your day taking into account the weather and the terrain you may be experiencing and of course, take due care around livestock.
1. Broadway Tower, near the beautiful North Cotswold village of Broadway, Worcestershire.
Easy parking is available in the charming village of Broadway, from where this walk begins. One of our favorite routes to take in the landmark of Broadway Tower, is the circular walk out of Broadway, which is around 4 miles. The route winds its way out of the village uphill to the tower where there are wonderful views if the weather is fine, then it is gently downhill via another footpath, back into Broadway.
There are several excellent spots from which to choose, for a well-earned drink and something good to eat after your walk, from the traditional Cotswold pub, The Crown and Trumpet, to high end dining experiences such as James Martin’s restaurant at the renowned Lygon Arms hotel.
2. The Lizard Coastal Walk in Cornwall
A fantastic route with often breathtaking views of the sea, which can seem particularly blue along this part of the coast, against the dark green and red Serpentinite rocks of the cliffs of this area. The beauty spot of Kynance cove can be very busy in summer, but less so out of peak season. This walk is around 7 miles, it needs around 3 hours and good walking shoes. Start at the romantic beauty spot of Kynance Cove with parking nearby and walk east following the coastal path. The route takes you above Pentreath Beach and on to the Lizard Lighthouse. Then on past the impressive ‘Lions Den’, (a 39-foot hole in the cliff), to Pen Oliver, then Bass Point, after which you will be turning left into Kynance village and back down to the Cove. There are several attractive pubs in the general area and a National Trust concession café down in Kynance Cove, where dogs are welcome outside of 1st July to 31st August.
3. Three Shires Head Walk, in the Peak District
The Three Shires Head marks a meeting point of the three counties of Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire, and is located within the beautiful Peak District countryside. This is a rambling circular route of about 6 miles, from and returning to The Roaches car park at Gradbach, traversing fields, down country lanes and through valleys with stunning vistas and river views on a fine day. We suggest allowing 2 ½ hours for this ramble. Set off by walking left out of the Gradbach car park, going left again over the bridge across the stream, making your way towards the river Dene. Look out for footpaths signed ‘DVW’ and part of the route in both directions, runs close to the banks of the river. You’ll see a beautiful collection of old bridges and waterfalls located at Three Shires Head and there are many good spots to stop for a while along the way if taking a picnic. Gradbach café is there to greet you at the end of your walk for snacks and sandwiches or discover some charming local pubs in the surrounding rural landscape, for something more substantial.
